What is Mango Lassi?

Mango Lassi is one of the most popular traditional Indian drinks, especially during the summer season. It’s a refreshing yogurt-based beverage made by blending ripe mango pulp, thick curd (yogurt), and sugar. What sets it apart is its creamy texture, vibrant tropical flavor, and the subtle aroma of cardamom.

Served chilled and sometimes topped with saffron or pistachios, Mango Lassi is more than just a drink—it’s a celebration of the mango season. Whether enjoyed during Holi, after a spicy meal, or as a cooling afternoon treat, this lassi recipe is quick, satisfying, and loved across generations.

Key Ingredients Spotlight

Each ingredient in Mango Lassi adds richness and balance. Here’s a closer look at what makes it truly shine:

Ripe Mango Pulp: Choose Alphonso, Kesar, or Ataulfo mangoes for a rich, natural sweetness and deep golden color. You can use fresh pulp or good-quality canned mango puree.

Thick Yogurt: Full-fat yogurt gives Mango Lassi its signature creaminess. If using homemade yogurt, strain it slightly for a thicker consistency.

Cardamom Powder: Just a pinch of ground green cardamom adds a gentle warmth and authentic Indian flavor that rounds off the sweetness beautifully.

Milk: A splash of milk helps thin the lassi to your desired consistency without diluting the richness.

Sugar: Adjust the sugar depending on the sweetness of your mangoes. Some canned pulp may already have added sugar.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mango: If using fresh mangoes, peel, chop, and puree the flesh until smooth. If using canned pulp, measure out 1 cup.
  2. Blend Ingredients: In a blender, combine mango pulp, thick yogurt, milk, sugar, cardamom powder, and ice cubes. Blend until completely smooth and creamy.
  3. Adjust Consistency: Add more milk for a thinner lassi, or more yogurt for a thicker one. Blend again briefly if adjusted.
  4. Chill: Refrigerate for 1–2 hours if not serving immediately. This enhances the flavor and cooling effect.
  5. Serve: Pour into tall glasses. Garnish with saffron strands and chopped pistachios, if desired. Serve chilled and enjoy!

Health Benefits

Mango Lassi is not just a treat for the taste buds—it comes with several health perks. Mangoes are rich in Vitamin A, antioxidants, and fiber. Yogurt provides probiotics that aid digestion and promote gut health. The addition of cardamom helps with digestion and offers anti-inflammatory benefits. This naturally gluten-free drink is hydrating and replenishing, making it ideal for hot weather. It can also be a nutrient-dense snack for children or a dessert substitute when sweet cravings hit.

Chef’s Tips & Tricks

Choose the Right Mango:
Use mangoes that are fully ripe, non-fibrous, and fragrant. Alphonso or Ataulfo are best.
Thicken with Greek Yogurt:
For extra creaminess, use Greek yogurt or hung curd.
Chill Everything:
For best results, chill the ingredients beforehand to avoid needing too much ice.
Make It Vegan:
Replace yogurt and milk with coconut or almond yogurt and plant-based milk.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Mango Lassi as a welcome drink at summer parties or festive meals. Pair it with spicy Indian snacks like samosas, pakoras, or chaat to balance the heat. You can also serve it alongside parathas or as a cooling finish after a biryani. In hot weather, it makes a wholesome and energizing breakfast drink.

Variations

  • Vegan Mango Lassi: Substitute dairy with coconut yogurt and almond milk.
  • Mango Rose Lassi: Add a few drops of rose water or rose syrup for a floral twist.
  • Spiced Mango Lassi: Blend in a pinch of ground cinnamon or nutmeg for warmth.
  • Frozen Mango Lassi: Use frozen mango chunks and skip the ice cubes for a smoothie-style texture.
  • No-Sugar Lassi: Use naturally sweet ripe mangoes and skip the added sugar for a healthier version.

Notes and Tips

You can make this Mango Lassi up to 24 hours in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Always serve it chilled. If using canned mango pulp, taste for sweetness before adding sugar. Blend in a few mint leaves for a refreshing twist, or try adding vanilla extract for an unusual yet delicious flavor.
